The Importance of Shopping Small this Christmas

Today is Small Business Saturday, a grassroots campaign which encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and support independent businesses in their communities. This year, it feels more crucial than ever as many small retailers face increasing challenges from inflation, competition from e-commerce giants, and the rising cost of living.

The recent closure of Tam Shepherd’s, Glasgow’s oldest family-run magic and joke store, after an incredible 138 years, is a sad reminder of the difficulties faced by small businesses. The owners attributed the closure to high running costs and uncertainty about the future of their building. Tam Shepherd’s was more than just a store; it was a piece of Glasgow’s history. Its loss is a reminder of what we stand to lose when we don’t support local businesses.

However, it does seem that many people are making the effort to support small businesses as we enter the festive shopping frenzy. Lots of customers are seeking out personalised and handmade gifts to make their presents truly one-of-a-kind. At our home in the Hidden Lane, we’re lucky to call so many amazing small makers our neighbours. We’re never stuck for a cute last-minute birthday card or special Secret Santa present.

The ‘Shop Small’ trend is gaining momentum across the UK. At this year’s Ideal Home Show Christmas, the I Do Handmade Christmas Village was a smash hit, taking part for the first time in the show’s history. Up to 20 independent different brands were there every day, offering a gorgeous collection of handmade gifts and accessories.

Last month we had a ball at VEGA’s new quarterly shopping event, ‘Off The Rails’ which featured a line-up of pre-loved fashion traders, local designers, and independent brands (plus cocktails and DJs). Euan Wilson, food and beverage manager at VEGA Glasgow, said: “With the shift towards supporting local and buying pre-loved, we know there’s a demand for a way to shop more sustainably and Christmas felt like the perfect time to launch it…”

Not only is shopping small better for your local community, it’s also better for the planet with small businesses leading the way in terms of sustainable, ethically-made products.

But it’s not just retail that is seeing a shift. At dot + del we love working with small, local businesses as well as nationwide giants. Our director, Hayley agrees: “There’s something about the camaraderie of small businesses helping each other that just aligns with our ethos. Working with local businesses obviously feels close to home, but supporting small business owners when you’re a small business owner yourself – there’s a little more personal investment.”

In fact, the latest figures from the UK Government stated that there are 5.5 million small or medium-sized businesses registered in the UK this year. That’s 99% of the business population, accounting for 60% of UK employment. And, as employment is front and centre focus of the Labour Government as announced on December 5th, it’s time to recognise the vital role they play in our economy.
